Cast Resin Transformers have air and no fluid as a cooling medium. The high voltage coils are completely surrounded by cast resin with all manufacturers and are consequently protected. With SGB this process occurs even under vacuum so that even the smallest voids are eliminated in the resin, as sooner or later, this lead to malfunction. As the distances must be bigger with air than with oil cooling, cast resin transformers are generally bigger and, because of the large amount of material, they are also more expensive than oil transformers.

So, why cast resin transformers then? Well the advantages speak for themselves:

High short time overload capability: The time constant for heating the coil is bigger than with oil transformers. Non-existant coolants: Cast resin transformers only need air for cooling. Coolants – whichever chemical compounds – can not get in the environment. There aren’t any collection pans.
